Serving up summer fun
Tennis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], anyone? Summer is the perfect time to pick up a racket and try out this court sport.
Towns and municipalities usually have free courts available,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so grab a friend and those neon globules they call tennis balls and get your feet moving.
Tennis is "a lifetime sport," said Dr. ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], founder,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], director and instructor of Melendez Tennis Camps. "You can start as early as 4 years old and play until 94."
His tennis camps for kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], now in their 11th year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are half-day camps in locations that include Danbury,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Brookfield and Bethel.
Melendez started playing in high school and wishes he had started earlier.
"I've had kids who had never picked up a racket who are now playing on the college level,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he explained. "Then they come back from college and they want to work for me.
Melendez keeps the student-to-instructor ratio at 4 to 1, and is very selective about the instructors.
"I take a lot of time with that process. They not only have to be great tennis players and teachers, but they need personalities that engage the kids. A lot of the kids come year after year, and many return because of their instructors,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said.
"I try to develop a passion for the sport. Tennis allows you to gain confidence, improve rapidly and enhance your social skills."
Besides gaining the skills of the sport and self-esteem, tennis is a physical challenge.
You are hitting, sprinting, moving in all directions and using hand-eye coordination.
"There is no doubt it is a rigorous sport. And we also do off-court fitness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including soccer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], kickball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], parachute games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Capture the Flag,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Melendez said.
"There is nothing better than running around for three and a half hours. By noon the kids are wiped out, but they are rejuvenated (by) the next day."
Records show tennis originated in France in the 12th century, and the ball was struck with the palm of the hand,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], instead of a racket.
In the 16th century, rackets came into use,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the game was played indoors, and it became popular in England and France.
Tennis is now played on a flat rectangular surface,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], usually made of grass, clay,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], concrete or asphalt.
Rackets cost $20 and up. Tennis balls run about $45, for a case of 72.
Today the champions of the game include Roddick and Venus and Serena,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but remember the day of McEnroe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Evert and Agassi? Personalities make tennis interesting, but you don't need to be a pro to try it and enjoy it.
"There is nothing better than seeing someone grow with the sport. Teaching is a great experience for me," Melendez said.
