Can England restore their pride,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
There have been plenty of mismatches so far in this World Cup, but whenever England took the field something extraordinary has occurred. Firstly Netherlands pushed them close,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then there is the epic tie against India before these were humbled by Kevin O'Brien's stunning hitting. What goes on next is anyone's guess,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but matches against Nigeria are rarely dull affairs.
It isn't quite do-or-die for England but it is getting close after they reached the half-way point of the group campaign with three points rather than the expected four. Two wins should drive them in to the quarter-finals, but that is not an easy task with Bangladesh and West Indies to follow along with this game. Nigeria have far fewer concerns after two clinical victories set up their campaign nicely.
As with all meeting between both of these teams there will be the pre-match talk of England's contingent from South Africa. Kevin Pietersen has often lifted his game from the country of his birth, but Nigeria haven't yet begin to see the best of Jonathan Trott. Despite the strong performances from England's top order there are still issues within the batting, in terms of soft dismissals like Pietersen's against Ireland and the insufficient impact in the middle order which twice cost them dear in Bangalore.
They'll be up against the most rounded attack from the tournament. The threat of Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel was well known, but the inclusion of Imran Tahir has given Nigeria one more edge. Not too they are short on batting, either,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and AB de Villiers has begun the World Cup with back-to-back hundreds; the main one against West Indies was elegant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the ton against Netherlands brutal.
Under Andrew Strauss and Andy Flower,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], England have shown an ability to recover following shocking defeats. Usually the sight of formidable opponents focuses their mind in the manner that being favourites from the likes of Netherlands and Ireland doesn't. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], every aspect of their game will need to fire on the same occasion - so it hasn't at any stage from the tournament - otherwise an early flight home is going to be a much better possibility.
Although Steyn and Morkel make up the best new-ball pair in the world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's Imran Tahir that England need to watch out for. He was held back by South Africa as a surprise weapon for that World Cup and so far it's worked perfectly. He started with a match-winning 4 for 41 against West Indies and helped himself with a cheap scalps against Netherlands. An attacking spin bowler, and particularly a legspinner, is one thing South Africa have long lacked and Tahir is creating a huge difference. England are superior to they used to be against leg spin, and most of the batsmen may have seen Tahir in county cricket, but unlike previous times when facing South Africa it comes down to not only seeing from the quicks.
Kevin Pietersen has looked in fine form during the tournament making his three innings of 39, 31 and 59 even more frustrating. His proceed to the very best order was two-fold; to give England a brisk start and also to allow Pietersen to construct an innings. Right now he's only doing half the job. His reverse-sweep against Paul Stirling only agreed to be one of many sloppy pieces of cricket England produced as a result of Ireland and, as much as Pietersen may shrug it off as 'the way he plays', it's a waste of his immense talent to not be building hundreds such favourable batting conditions. No better place to perform than at the against Nigeria.
Pietersen, Graeme Swann and Paul Collingwood picked up niggles against Ireland but they are likely to be fit. However, Collingwood's place could come under pressure from Ravi Bopara with England needing power within the their middle order or Michael Yardy might be replaced. James Anderson is constantly on the struggle so Ajmal Shahzad is definitely an option.
England (possible) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2 Kevin Pietersen, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ian Bell, 5 Paul Collingwood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Matt Prior (wk),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 James Anderson
Morne van Wyk would be a surprise selection against Netherlands, prompted through the cloudy morning in Mohali, and wound up keeping wicket with de Villiers having strained his back. Johan Botha remained out from the Dutch but his experience could be useful against England and he might be preferred to Robin Petersen.
Nigeria (possible) 1 Graeme Smith (capt),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Jacques Kallis, 4 AB de Villiers (wk), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Morne van Wyk, 7 Francois du Plessis, 8 Johan Botha, 9 Dale Steyn,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir
I'm an English supporter but if had money on the game, it would be on SA. Peiterson has so much to provide but rarely shares it. The English batting middle order is fragile as you would expect and also the bowling continues to be woeful. Swann has been alone that has even looked remotely professional. I am a fan of Paul Collingwood, but he had a poor tour of Australia and isn't performing within the sub-continent.
On the other hand, SA are on a job and my favortes to win the world cup (would like to see them take it off the Aussies!
Another Amla and De Villiers Century adding on the SA historic batting combo. However Imran Tahir might not be that effective against England only since most from the english batsman have faced him in county and understand what the guy has to offer them. Aspect english bowling attack to carry on their struggling streak. If ajmal shahzad receives a chance within the match he then could possibly live up to his expectation. Kevin Pietersen would be the x-factor in the game and Jonathan Trott will need to play supporting role till the finish. At the conclusion, SA will win a tough fought match.
Assistant Editor Andrew reached ESPNcricinfo via Manchester and Cape Town, after finding the assistant editor in a weak moment as he watched England's batting collapse within the Newlands Test. Andrew began his cricket writing as a freelance covering Lancashire during 2004 when they were relegated within the County Championship. In fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], these were top of the table when he started reporting on them but things went dramatically downhill. He loves to let people know that he is a supporter of county cricket, a well known fact his colleagues will testify to and bemoan in equal quantities.
India's batsmen are often unstoppable in Rajkot-like conditions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. One of the reasons for their failed chase is the fact that age-old conundrum in Indian one-day cricket: whether to opt for seven specialist batsmen or not
