James Marinero Article Feed :
We write novels, and work hard to build a readership. We want not just readers but followers who will come back for our next masterpiece. Yet it can be easy to throw [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] away this [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] opportunity to gain long term fans. I was recently reading a thriller authored by a New York Times #1 Best Seller name. He has a whole string of books to his name and is obviously successful. However, my enjoyment of the book was spoiled by numerous inaccuracies of fact. I struggled through, nearly to the end, but couldn't complete what had become for me, a chore. As it happens, there is another one of his right there on the bookshelf, but I shan't try to read it.
He very probably has a team of writers working for him - (indeed the joins are visible in places) - but facts are straightforward to verify.
I know what I enjoy, and know what spoils a book for me. I have a critical (yes, and aging) brain and reasonably wide knowledge, so I feel suitably qualified to question fiction writing. It follows that my own writing is informed both by my reading and by my experience. When I write, I research thoroughly and have my facts checked independently. I would be mortified if the sort of factual errors that were in 'that book' were found in any of my work. It looks like production line writing with little concern for factual accuracy. If it is factory writing, then they need a quality circle in their writing factory.
I love escapist reading, but inaccurate facts bring me back to reality, closing the escape.
What is possibly more concerning is that these novels are published by one of the world's [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] leading publishers. Do the publishers not have editors and fact checkers?
Am I being excessively picky about the detail? Maybe I'm [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] a lone reader in this respect. Doesn't sloppy research (if any at all) spoil the enjoyment for other people too? The novelist is obviously in demand - (he sells millions) - so I assume that the good points in his work outweigh the negatives that I see, in the minds of the majority of his readers.
Maybe it's just that I am not in the target market of this author. To what level of consumer is he appealing?
Finally, the reviews for the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] work, by leading publishers' periodicals, are glowing, with no mention of the apparent lack of quality control and frequent inaccuracies which should be apparent to anyone with half a brain.
So, the failure [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] is on three levels - the author (and his team), the publisher, and the trade press which is not suitably critical. It could be said that the publishers' ads fund the trade press, but that is cynical.
I've added his name to my list of two (now three) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] authors whose work I avoid. No doubt, there are some that will put [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] me on their list too, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] as I'm careful about facts. I don't [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] believe that everything has to be explained, or should be explained, to the reader. However, facts should be checked.

On Writing - Fact Checking - Does It Matter?Article Summary: How carefully should writers [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] check their facts. Surprisingly, some best selling authors do not score highly on this scale. Does it affect their readership? James Marinero's veiws are acerbic, and he has several 'don't read' novels on his bookshelf.
