Baltimore Ravens and New York Giants look for game results
The time for talk is over,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it appears that all of the Giants' safety nets have been removed. The stark reality is that a loss today at Baltimore against the Ravens,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the Giants can be eliminated from the NFL playoffs.
Any discussion of team meetings and intangibles should be eliminated for the Giants mind-set,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the focus should be on the actual performance on the field.
1. Giants defensive line versus Ravens offensive line: Fans of both teams have not been happy with the play of these units,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it appears that the Ravens will be getting back OG Marshal Yanda from an ankle injury today. If they do, his presence will solidify the o-line, and allow the purple and black to use Ray Rice effectively.
For the Giants, whether or not Justin Tuck plays should be irrelevant. There exists enough depth on the G-men's defensive line to adjust. Regardless of what he says, Jason Pierre-Paul must step up and make big plays today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chris Canty must be stellar in stopping the rushing game, and Mathias Kiwanuka needs to replicate his two sack game against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers.
Will someone like Adrian Tracy or Adewale Ojomo step up in Tuck's absence?
2. Ray Rice: The more touches that Rice gets for the Ravens, the greater likelihood of a Baltimore victory. Rice is dual threat; he can hurt you running or catching the ball out of the backfield. The Giants have not played the run well recently, and they typically struggle covering backs out of the backfield. Containg Rice is not a good match-up for the G-men.
Most likely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Ravens will first try to establish the running game with Rice, and if the Giants are unable to stop it, then it will continue. Ravens' quarterback Joe Flacco is a capable game manager,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the establishment of a run game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], allows him to remain in his comfort zone. But the Giants' troubles don't stop with the running game, as Rice has 55 catches out of the backfield.
3. Eli Manning: Lost in the shutout against the Atlanta Falcons has been the fact that Eli Manning has struggled mightily. His first possession interception by Asante Samuel last week, dug a hole from which the Giants could never recover.
And while the turnovers by Manning have hurt the Giants, the lack of success of the G-men in the red zone has also been a critical deficiency this year. Hakeem Nicks will be as healthy as he has been all year today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Manning has had wideout Domenik Hixon at his disposal lately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so the time for excuses is over.
Will Kevin Gilbride find a way to get David Wilson the ball in space,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
4. Ravens' Injuries: Face it, having one-third of your active roster on the injury report is not the way to go into a big game in late-December,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that's exactly what the Ravens are being asked to do. And while Joe Flacco and John Harbaugh had heard it this week from the fans and media alike, the defense is not what it has been.
The team lost cornerback Ladarius Webb to a knee injury, and they have played several games without defensive player of the year Terrell Suggs, and Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis as well. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata has been nursing a knee injury,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and linebacker Jameel McClain was placed on season-ending injured reserve this week.
Injuries are not supposed be an excuse in the NFL,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the Ravens have had more than their fair share this year. How effective Suggs and Ngata are today will go a long way to determine how effective the Ravens' defense can be.
5. Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin and coaching staff: No one would have ever figured that anyone would call Tom Coughlin a "player's coach" but that is exactly what he is. He has constantly mentioned the need for his veteran players to right the ship, and he hasn't meddled too much with his starting line-up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even though veterans on the offensive and defensive lines have struggled.
But the time for loyalty has faded into the reality of a playoff fight, and Coughlin and his coaching staff should focus on who is performing today, and perhaps more importantly who is not.
One player who has struggled recently, but is unable to replaced today is kicker Lawrence Tynes, and Coughlin better hope his loyalty does not come back to haunt him today.
