'Average Joe' takes on Raptors stars
Taylor Sibbald is, in his words, just an "average Joe" who recently got a promotion at work and lives in a comfortable two-storey home on a quiet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tree-lined street in Erin Mills.
Things have changed quickly for Sibbald. Now, he's "the man" who lives on Jefton Cr.
It started as a simple entry in a contest last April and culminated with a giant street party this morning for Sibbald, 22, and his friends,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including Jamario Moon and Anthony Parker of the NBA's Toronto Raptors.
There were television crews from the mainstream Toronto media,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], filming Sibbald as he, his father, Randy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and some buddies teamed up for a little three-on-three street basketball ball game with Moon and Parker.
"I couldn't sleep last night and I couldn't eat this morning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Sibbald.
"I've never been this nervous," added the graduate of John Fraser Secondary School as he glanced around at more than 100 people who lined both sides of the street in front of his house. "I guess I'm not an average Joe any more. My friends envy me.
"I didn't think it would be anything like this, but I guess once everybody heard about it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it had a snowball effect."
Sibbald,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who classifies himself as a die-hard basketball fan, won the Direct Energy Driveway Challenge contest last April during half-time of a Raptors' game at the Air Canada Centre. He connected on more shots from centre court than any of the other contestants.
His prize was today's bash. A mini basketball court was outlined in chalk and the Raptors logo was painted at centre court,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the middle of the street. There was a professional sound system set up between the sidewalk and the street with music blaring.
A barbecue was set up in front of Sibbald's house for the spectators,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. There was Cabbie on the Street from SCORE-TV handling emcee duties and members of the Raptors' Dance Pak squad joined the party as well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"This is tremendous," said John Norquay, who lives on the same street. "I've never seen this many people on this street unless it's for fireworks."
In the background, a letter carrier went about her business, moving door to door.
"This is cool, man,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Moon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who flew in from Puerto Rico, where he was spending time with his wife's family. "It gives us a chance to interact with the fans away from the court and have some fun in the process."
After a skills competition and a brief three-on-three game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Moon and Parker sat in a kiosk on Sibbald's driveway signing autographs.
"Words can't describe how I feel," said Sibbald,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who goes to a Raptors game in New Jersey each year "just to boo Vince Carter."
"I guess when it comes to basketball fans, I'm up there with the best," he continued. "I go to the games and when I can't go I watch it on TV. And if I can't see it on TV,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then I listen on radio."
