Sporting News' NBA awards ballot
There was a time, not long ago, when my mailbox would become overridden with materials from NBA teams, less-than-subtle tokens-bobbleheads,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], T-shirts, even sneakers-reminding me which way to turn my attention when it was time to cast my ballot for the league's annual honors. Things always get a little silly when it comes time to pick the league MVP, and this year was no different. You will always hear hypotheticals like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "If you took so-and-so off Team X, where would they be?" That, friends, is no basis for judging an MVP, because,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact, so-and-so is on Team X, and (ask the Nuggets) you never know what the team would be like with or without a player.
While there have been several statistical arguments made against Rose's MVP candidacy, I do consider advanced stats as part of the bigger overall picture. And from my vantage point, the advanced stats can be used to support Rose, too. He ranks ninth in player efficiency,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the next Bull on the list is Carlos Boozer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], way down at No. 40. James and Dwyane Wade are Nos. 1 and 3 on the list, Durant and Russell Westbrook are Nos. 7 and 8,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Bryant and Pau Gasol are Nos. 5 and 11.
The only other MVP candidate who isn't well-supported by another PER star is Dwight Howard (No. 2), whose Magic have-ahem-Ryan Anderson at No. 36. Howard having an inferior supporting has been used as an argument against Rose.
That is true. But, because Rose has a better cast, he'd probably be expected to lead his team to a better record than Howard. And he has-a whopping 10 games better. If Howard and Rose had led their teams to the same number of wins, Howard would be the MVP.
Ultimately, no matter how you look at it, the Bulls decided this year to let Rose be their leader on the floor and in the locker room. It paid off. Chicago won 62 games, most in the league, with Rose averaging 25.0 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds. Statistical analysis is a factor, but it's also a good idea for voters to ask players and coaches inside the game for their opinions. About 80 percent tell me they'd vote for Rose.
Tough call on this one, as always. Philadelphia's Doug Collins, Oklahoma City's Scott Brooks and Portland's Nate McMillan were also on the short list, but no coach has handled a more difficult year better than Karl, even if you put aside his battle with cancer, which I did not factor into my voting. Karl came into the season with a displeased star, dealt with over six months of trade rumors and still kept his team in the West playoff race. Then, after Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups were shipped away, Karl slapped in four new guys, completely changed his team's approach and still led Denver to 50 wins and the No. 5 seed. Well done.
1. Dorell Wright, Warriors; 2. Kris Humphries, Nets; 3. Kyle Lowry, Rockets. Never really know how to vote for this, and would not mind if the league dumped it as a category. It seems odd to vote for guys like Kevin Love and Westbrook, high draft picks who are simply doing what they're supposed to-coming into their own in their third seasons. That's maturing, not improving. I went with Wright because,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before this year, he was a corner-3 specialist who mostly stayed out of the way in Miami. This year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], knowing he had an opportunity to play for the Warriors, he worked to expand his shooting zone and the results were tangible: 16.4 points per game and 37.6 percent 3-point shooting.
