Nostalgia pays off for these old mods,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
FEATURING the two least interesting members of Paul Weller's legendary post-punk trio (plus some hired help),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], From The Jam could very easily have been a tragic joke.
Rather than serving sloppy seconds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this strange hybrid -- are we watching a half-cocked comeback, a tribute band,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or a bit of both? -- proves an unexpected delight.
Flanked by a surprisingly effective Weller stand-in named Russell Hastings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jam bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Rick Buckler romp through a repertoire of late 1970s classics with such raw-knuckled fervour you could almost overlook the absence of their charismatic former- leader.
Clearly, Foxton has weathered the decades better than his old partner. Dressed in a regulation mod outfit of suit and white sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his fringe casually spiked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he looks scarcely a day over 35.
This is in contrast to Buckler who could pass for somebody's grandfather: he's lost most of his hair and seems careworn.
Not that middle age has diminished his powers as a sticksman -- he still smashes his drums as if trying to punch a hole through the pigskin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Still,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's no getting around the elephant in the room. With no Weller,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this was never going to be anything other than a Jam covers night. After all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the original Jam was essentially a one-person band -- Weller wrote and arranged all of the music. A Weller-less Jam is a bit like the Beatles without Lennon or McCartney.
It's just as well nobody has come expecting an evening of life-changing music. All the audience wants are the The Jam's hits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], delivered efficiently and with a minimum of grandstanding.
Foxton and Buckler are glad to oblige -- skipping back and forth through the group's five-year career,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they dust down familiar anthems like 'That's Entertainment',[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fan favourites like 'No One In The World' and album stand-outs like 'Modern World'. And what might have been a sad exercise in nostalgia somehow captures the wildfire spirit of the punk explosion.
