Fabled Phoenician carvings give up secrets of their original colors
WASHINGTON,Jimmy Choo Shoes Sale, May 29 () -- Ivory carvings from an ancient Phoenician city look dull and colorless in museums but glittered with brilliant colors 2,800 years ago, French researchers say.A non-destructive testing technology has shown the fabled carvings from the ancient city of Arslan Tash -- literally meaning "Stone Lion" -- glittered with brilliant blue, red, gold and other colors when they were created, the researchers wrote in the American Chemical Society's journal Analytical Chemistry.Ina Reiche and her colleagues at the Laboratoire d'Archeologie Moleculaire et Structurale in Paris said their finding ends decades of speculation about the original appearance of the carvings.Experts long believed the lion heads, amulets and other objects were brightly colored, rather than the bland beiges and whites they appear in today. However, until recently there was no adequate way to test the ivories for traces of pigment without damaging the priceless objects held in many museums including the Louvre in Paris. The technology could be used to determine the original paint coverings on other objects, the researchers said, including the Elgin Marbles,Cheap Jimmy Choo Shoes, the classical Greek marble sculptures that originally were part of the Parthenon and other buildings on the Acropolis in Athens and now reside in the British Museum in London.
