Pitfalls of writing a main character of various gender to the author
I realize part one from the question might be more dependent on opinion, which is why I included the 2nd part to make it more concrete. This was circa 7 years ago and that i never witnessed it disproven. No one has so far advanced a convincing theory why this ought to be, just appears to be. Would love to have solid numerous examples of this as being a bunch of dingoes kidneys though. After all women right male first person protagonists all the time. I think there's a tough to define "feel" to some female narrative voice that men seem unable to make use of for whatever reason. It not necessarily exactly the same problem either. In my case I made my female protagonist appear to be a whiner when she was said to be tough. when i say I don know. One Monkey May 12 '11 at 9:06
Short answer: The pro is that if you're doing so well, your fans will heartily be thankful. The con is that it takes more effort, and if you turn to stereotypes or cardboard-cutouts for your female characters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will annoy a whole lot of your readers.
Long answer:
To begin with, who is your audience? Are you a man writing a tale mainly for other men as if you to see? If that's the case, you might not mind if women roll their eyes when they call at your story. If you plan to have a mixed or female audience, then you may have to put some more effort to your female characters.
There are lots of people who have spent considerable time criticizing female stereotypes and exactly how females in many cases are portrayed. They've created a plethora of resources for you to examine so that you can avoid those pitfalls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. To get you started:
The Female Character Flowchart
Faux Action Girl
The Chick
Men Act, Women Are
Sarah Haskins addresses Lifetime
You can scrimp though. I personally think you will get very far simply by writing your characters in a way that they might be either male or female. Or do this trick: If you changed the gender of that character,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], would the character still work? It is fine if the response is no, however you have to have the ability to think of a good reason why that personality or behaviour only works for one gender. You most likely will not be able to compete on that front unless it is a fascination of yours that you simply passionately pursue. That is fine. If you feel you are struggling to create a main female character because you believe you simply can't understand women enough, then don't write one. If you have discovered the stereotypes along with a female character is forming in your thoughts, then go on and give her a story.
thanks a lot. Those resources can be really helpful. I written many supporting female characters that (I believe) work nicely. I don have a specific female main character in mind at present,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but I considered the idea several times and always dismissed it as perhaps too risky, but never knew exactly how to teach myself about the matter. All your answers is a great help. Although I additionally think there is a significant subjectivity to our judgement of the portrayals: the first time I read both Madame Bovary AND Anna Karenina, I was frustrated by the female characters and tempted to write them off as unrealistic - the next time I read them, I changed my thoughts!
So, I disagree with the indisputable fact that men, in general, cannot write female characters well. However i have certainly read some messes in which men didn't write female characters well. I would also disagree using the idea that you need to "play it safe and write how you would for a dude." I do not think we have to enter a nature/nurture debate to determine that women currently alive, and, In my opinion, alive at any time or place ever, possess a different life experience than men. What exactly are her general activities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sure, but additionally what are the experiences that she's had as a woman? When she would be a little girl, was she dressed up frilly, or was she a tomboy? Was it her choice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or her parents'? Did she feel guilty the very first time she had sex? Has she have you been called a slut, and how did which make her feel? So how exactly does she dress now? When's the very first time she was sexually harassed, and how did she react? When's the most RECENT time she was sexually harassed, and just how did she react That point? Has she ever been pregnant? Ever had a pregnancy scare? Ever endured an abortion? How did she experience that? etc. etc. ETC. There are plenty of differences between male and female characters.
If you think as if you have good answers for those these questions, maybe you need to start writing a lady character. A male writing like a female isn't any diverse from if he wrote about someone of the different nationality, race, or creed. You'll face the same core obstacle, the ability to place yourself in the shoes of that person,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and find out the planet through their eyes, not your personal. Not just that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you have to observe how the planet views them as well. If you do not do that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then you definitely run the risk of creating very clichéd characters.
I happen to read the Assassin's Trilogies (quite a while ago), to put it in context: if you think of the characters again, you'll find that all the males and females within the story fulfil their gender roles according to their physical differences, social and cultural setting, their background and experiences. Nothing rings false, since the characters are in keeping with themselves, and that is the key to portraying any character, whether male,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], female, Chinese, whatever.
