"Two weeks ago we'd planned on doing a test on the furnace, but we had a small issue with the transformer," Jafarnia said. "We had to certify the transformer for Nova Scotia Power before they'd let us connect it with the main network."
Getting an inspector meant a two-week delay, but that will finally happen early next week. From there,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he said, the foundry will be ready to accept "big orders."
"Already I have orders arranged with a few big companies interested in working with us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and that means big dollar figures," he said. "This big company cannot wait for us and wants to make sure we have no problems before having us produce the products."
That could mean hiring 50 people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and then more based on the quantity of work.
"I've been on the road the last few weeks to see customers, and most are glad to see Maritime Steel is back," he said, adding that he's made a case to get some work in the second half of the year from National Estate Car, one of the biggest car manufacturers in Ontario. On Tuesday night, he finalized a deal for an order in Europe.
That sounds good to Jerry Greene, who is head of the union.
"It'd be great if we could have everybody back, I'd like to see them all back, there are 100 guys who haven't worked in a year," Greene said. "The boss has cleaned it up a lot, he's improved it without even getting work."
Maritime Steel has undergone a transformation since Jafarnia purchased it. When he bought the facility in August, papers were strewn around the office and empty coffee cups from the year before littered the desks. It was trashed, he admits. Today, it's spic and span.
"The shop is completely clean," he said. "I took eight trucks of paper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], six trucks of old patterns, that had all been on the property since 1902. I did a lot of cleaning, we had no room for patterns before."
That allowed another deal Jafarnia has made to go through. He's offering space to the company that constructed Maritime Steel's patterns, free of charge.
Convincing the Ontario company to come to town and hire local people on Maritime Steel's property will save the company about $6,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 a month in shipping costs, he believes.
He's still considering moving the plant from the downtown in the future.
"This property is at the centre of town, and as a business owner, every business is trying to make money," he said. "If it gets to the point that the value of the property is more than using it for a foundry, we'll look at selling it."
And if that happens,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it may mean a move out of the county altogether, he said.
"It would be too soon to talk about that, but put yourself in my shoes - I do not have the support from this community and the politicians, would you stay? I haven't seen any interest from this community so far, but I have about 70 resumes on my desk from people who want to work and none of these officials have knocked at my door yet."

And then when someone stepped up with a decent offer, everyone complained for whatever reasons you had, and now that this foundry is up and running and has already hiring people back, the owner feels like he has no support, and if he moves from downtown, he might move right out of PC. I am ashamed to be from this area at this point in time. I remember reading all the comments you all left on the multiple articles regarding the sale of the foundry, and I remember reading the comments from the Town of NG in the articles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and all anyone ever wanted to do was slam Mr Jafarnia. I personally would like to thank Mr Jafarnia for never backing down on trying to get the foundry up and running. He's cleaned up the property (which you can clearly see when you drive by),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and from what I hear, he's done quite a bit on the inside where we can't see. And with 1 inspection, he will hopefully have half of those people laid off back to work, with more coming. I have nothing to do with the foundry, I don't believe I even know anyone who works there, but in this economy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm happy to hear he has things moving. I think this county owes Mr Jafarnia a HUGE THANK YOU, because even with all your negative thoughts and comments, he is the one who's getting these jobs back. So Mr Jafarnia, Thank you!
