Charitable Giving
It makes more sense to think of our leaders and intellectuals as half-crazed hooting howler monkeys - just like the rest of us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
-Michael Lind,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Salon, August 23,2011
"Seeing what isn't there is half the job of being on the Left. The other half is changing what isn't there through costly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], intrusive, and ill-conceived initiatives (save 10 percent for keeping Charlie Rangel out of trouble)." -Abe Greenberg, October 9,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2009
"To date,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what non-Obama voters see, and fear, is a candidate content to coast to the nomination and then conduct a blandly conservative campaign. They want a more substantive choice than that. They want to have it out over the worth or danger of Barack Obama's ideas. They want the chance to ratify Washington's enormous long-term claims on the country's wealth, or decisively reject them." - Daniel Henninger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], WSJ, July 21, 2011
One of the things that has occupied my brain for many years is the ethics of charitable giving. Yesterday I heard something that disturbed me. A well-regarded feeding ministry here in town takes their trucks out several nights a week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], loaded with PB sandwiches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fruit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and hard boiled eggs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as donated blankets and clothing, to the poor areas of town and places where the homeless gather. What I was told was that when they go to the low income housing, the trucks are swarmed with people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grown ups and children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who grab what they can, clothing, sandwiches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whatever,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just because it's free. It's hubbub, with people jostling a grabbing stuff without regard as to whether they actually need it.
I'm going to volunteer to go out on a few of these runs and see what gives, so to speak. But I am entirely opposed to give-aways that require nothing of the recipients. By requirement, I simply mean "stand in line" or "wait your turn" or "children first", something along those lines. I'll reserve judgment (and not name) of this particular charity, but I loathe the programs that are designed to make the volunteers feel good at the expense of the dignity of the people being served. Encouraging people to grab "free stuff" from your truck sends a rather clear message,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I think. Thinking of England.
