Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome PTSS
I believe you are bang on! I know that if you've been in the industry long enough you will either witness a gruesome sight or be involved in that unfortuneate circumstance.
Do I suffer from PTSD, No! Have I seen or been involved in a trajic accident,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Yes!
I have a friend and colleague who was the unfortuneate recipient of a Suicide by Truck incident. The circumstances of the accident were: The driver of the half ton had just had an arguement with his ex-wife(I think there are folks that can relate to this one), he stormed out of his ex's house and drove straight into my buddy's truck!Nothing in the world my friend could have done or prepared him for this accident. After managing to wiggle out of his truck, my buddy was witness to what happens to the human body after a 60 mph head-on(The driver of the half ton was not seat belted in).
We all have heard of these types of accidents, and we all react differently to moments of crisis's!
My friend, after some time off from driving, tried to return to work as a professional driver.
He would keep seeing this half ton coming at him, and would believe that at any moment that car or truck coming at him, in the other lane,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], would also swerve at any moment to collide with him.
He no longer drives professionally! He has to seek professional help, so that he can even drive his own car!
Does this make him weak and soft? Does the fact that you or I can somehow put a scene of utter trajedy, and fatality, out of our minds make us tough old truck drivers?
I think you know the answer to that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]!
The term "PTSS" was originally adopted to sanitize the term "Shellshock" which was what soldiers suffererd during and after wartimes. Thats what our society does, it sanitizes and desensitizes what is real. Your analogy further desensitizes the afflictions of those who live and work in battlezones. I suggest cutting the fat, salt, cigarettes, and alcohol out of ones diet could do wonders for ones blood pressure and help deal with what is nothing more than anxiety. I wonder, do any truckers retire in good health?
Do you honestly believe that the "Industry" bears the responsibility for the many years of neglecting the truckers health? I think we have always known the difference between healthy living and a death march. While the fresh veggies and fruit are available at the fuel counter, the buffet is still open . I don't see the fruit and veggie counter swamped with healthy eaters but the buffet always looks like a bomb hit it . In addition , since we have nice trucks now,we can simply take our sodium rich, high cholesterol treats right out of fridge to the microwave and right back to our king size sleeper where the remote is waiting TV/DVD combo. Not likely to see any truckers walkin a few km's around the parking lot anytime soon.
I would really like to be nice but I also have physcological issues that the "Industry" needs to get on top of SOON. We make our own choices in life through freewill and logical thinking so if one cannot find their own willpower to bring about a change in lifestyle, one cannot look for scape-goats to satisfy their own shortcomings or lack of willpower.
My issue is with your point comparing "Post traumatic stress disorder" which originated from the term "Shellshock" or that a trucker could actually endure such an affliction is rubbish.
Regardless of what the government may put in place to address the health and mental well being of truckers , it is still ultimately the drivers choice seek it out and put it into practice. Personally , I don't have alot faith in my government to ever be able to implement such resources effectively or efficiently. The choice is personal and only yours to make.
When you hear the screams of a driver caught in a tanker as he burns alive you will know the definitions of Shell Shocked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when you see the body of a young Indian girl being ran over 3 times by the tractor trailers whose drivers had no idea what was happening, you'll understand the meaning of Shell Shocked, when you see the body of a man,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that just a few moments ago was walking along the highway, wrapped around the duals of a driver's drive axle and wedged between the fenders you'll know the meaning of Shell Shocked and after a life time of driving, longer than I suggest you have driven, then you will come to the understanding of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome!
Again, don't minimize or demean the Professional Driver whom over a life time can lay witness to so many accidents of a life and death scenario, and as the defintion of "Shell Shocked" means, the stress of being in a situation of prolonged trauma or unexpected difficulty!
If what you are doing is to defend those who have been in battle as being the only ones that experienced Shell Shocked, I'm sorry but you are wrong! Those few who have experienced actual battle would surely know what we are talking about here.
Again, not all of us come out the other side of a "Traumatic Stress" scenario feeling and adjusting to life just the same! How if your any kind of feeling, emotional being,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], come out of those kind of stresses, the same person as you came into them?
Hopefully, you never have to!!
18 years old when I was in a video arcade at Yonge +Dundas . A speeding car mounted the crowded side walk and came through the front window of the arcade knocking the very machine I was playing clean out of my hands while sendind a rain of broken glass all over me. It was traumatic to say the least looking at the people under the car "dead". A voice called out to me ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Can you help me? I was puzzled to see a young woman reaching for my hand. She was attempting to walk on all the broken glass , bare- foot , with her shoes in her hands . I helped her into the arcade where she layed down on the floor. Thats when I noticed that her calfs were badly cut and she was losing blood fast . I am often tempted to do the research and find out what the end result of that day was for the people directly involved but knowing the outcome for that young woman we helped that day when there were less than seconds to spare ,could break my heart. I'm not sure if there is a real "need to know" here and until I figure that out, I'll leave it alone .
I apologize for being a tad graphic but as the human mind is "unerasable", I remember this day very clearly . This is one of only a few isolated incidence that one can be traumatized by in a life time . Depending on what type of employment or lifestyle your are engaged in , would dictate your exposure to such incidence.
Going up the ladder to police ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], paramedics, Firemen , doctors, and trauma units who deal with trauma regularly, some more than others, they rarely ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if ever bear wittness to the moment of chaos or carnage.
"Prolonged trauma" as you put it, is just that. Who actually experiences "Prolonged trauma". I dare say that most of us have had enough "Peace" in our lives to dilute those few isolated moments in life when the walls come crashing down.
Do your moments of chaos or carnage happen as a daily, weekly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], montly,or annuall occurences that would qualify them to be "Prolonged". Yes, you have probably seen some bad things as many truckers have over their lifetime but is your daily grind to "kill or be killed" while listening for incoming mortor rounds .
I have never served in the military but I believe that there is enough history to show that "WE are at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to "Them" with regards to PTSD but feel free to call it what ever you want. It's just another bad day at work for most people.
