Gophers' Gray grudgingly steps into his new
MADISON, WIS. - MarQueis Gray has stiff-armed his inevitable future for 4 years now. On Saturday, he appeared to embrace it. Grudgingly.
A twice-injured ankle limited the Gophers' senior leader too severely for him to practice at his preferred position now. And with the Gophers' record melting in the heat of a Big Ten schedule,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gray's dream of a heroic season at quarterback found an apparent end, too.
Gray arranged Saturday at receiver, the positioning he excelled at like a freshman and sophomore,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but one he always insisted was his second choice. He caught three passes, gained 20 yards, and watched Philip Nelson grow into the shoes he always aspired to wear.
Then, in what felt oddly just like a farewell,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he acknowledged that circumstances had changed, both with his team as well as in his own life.
"Anywhere I have a chance to play NFL games, this is the thing I'm going to do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Gray, a soon-to-be-married father of two,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who had been once explained the coach who recruited him, Tim Brewster, as a potential first-round pick -- as a wide receiver. "I possess a family to maintain,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and if I am a receiver in the next stage, then that is what I'm going to play."
Gray publicly supported his young successor, even offered him advice before the game and on the sideline.
"I told him, 'Just go through your reads, make plays,'" Gray said. "He made plays available, and he got some rhythm going."
But Gray's body language after the game seemed to reflect the loss to the Badgers, along with the loss of his position. He acknowledged that this past month, being too injured to quarterback his team, is hard to simply accept.
"It's painful not available, not 100 percent like I was in the first game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Gray said. "But that's the bet on football. I gotta carry on doing my rehab and hopefully continue to get better."
He hasn't taken his last snap,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], coach Jerry Kill said. The Gophers, having sacrificed Nelson's redshirt, are basically devoted to finishing the growing season with the freshman under center, but Kill said Gray could morph into a valuable change of pace.
"It does not mean you won't see MarQueis play some quarterback. Before I got the task [in 2010], MarQueis came in and did some things like this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Kill said. "The other area of it is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], MarQueis is a valuable receiver. We've got to obtain him healthy and feeling good."
That part, Gray certainly will follow. What position he plays isn't as much as him, Gray understands.
"I'm just concentrating on getting my injury back in order so I'm able to venture out there and play full speed, be it at receiver or quarterback," Gray said. "It doesn't really matter to me."
