CHICAGO, May 31 () -- Hotel workers on strike in Chicago for 10 years said they have thrown in the towel, calling off the work action with no gain in wages.The Chicago Tribune reported Friday Unite Here Local 1, which represents cleaning and maintenance staff at the Congress Plaza Hotel, called off its strike this week although room attendants at the hotel still make $8.83 per hour, about half the average rate for the city, which is $16.40 per hour. The strike began with 130 union members but many of them have either left for new jobs or crossed the picket line, the Tribune said."The decision to end the Congress strike was a hard one, but it is the right time for the union and the strikers to move on," Unite Here Local 1 President Henry Tamarin said in a statement."The boycott has effectively and dramatically reduced the hotel's business. ... There is no more to do there," the statement said.The union and the hotel have spent a fair amount of time in courtrooms. Most recently, the hotel took the union to court on charges that it was harassing customers. The television show, "America's Next Top Model," was scheduled to hold a casting event at the hotel, but moved to another location after union members interfered, the hotel's management said.
